The Society

The LeRoc Society is, in the opinion of many, the best dance society within the University. The society gives you the opportunity to learn a type of dance which is fundamentally very easy; because of this, it is easy to have a complete sense of accomplishment after your first lesson and it allows you to also concentrate on the social side of the society (an aspect that the society takes very importantly). Many beginners have an aim of becoming a competent dancer by the time the Annual Christmas Ball comes around (around 8 lessons into term!). Last year, our turnout was amazing (see picture below) - girls, it is the ball that you always dreamed of when you were a child - it's amazing!

If all of the social dancing isn't enough for you, with our teachers, who are multiple award and competition winners, and the advice of some society members who also compete (and win!) in national competitions, the Bristol LeRoc Society will help you excel at dancing if that's your thing.

Finally, the society is based around weekly classes on a Thursday evening that run trhoughout the Autumn and Spring University terms. Send any of the committee an e-mail if you want to find out any more about any aspect of the society.

We also can arrange demos (email: demos@bristol-leroc.org.uk) which can include a taster lesson at your event!! Or if you want to know more about what we are up to then email us at events@bristol-leroc.org.uk.

WinterBall2010

The society is equally split between guys and girls and getting involved is a great way to make new friends. No previous knowledge or experience of dancing is required for any lesson or event. There is no need to come with a partner as there will always be lots of people willing to dance. The highlight of the year is the Annual Winter Ball; above is a picture of the students who attended in December 2010.

The society participates in the University Annual Dance Show each year. Our last two performances are below!

President - Tashi Gillett-Skeath

tashi

Email her: president@bristol-leroc.org.uk

Tashi will be in her second year when she undertakes the role of President. It is speculated that Tashi first decided to learn Modern Jive after she (and her friends) decided that waving her hands around in a style fit for Hawaii wasn't really dancing (even though this dance can conveniently be done whilst seated). When she joined LeRoc, her well-spoken assured nature helped her come across in such a mature fashion that her older peers snapped her up. But if she's not happy, the finger will come out and you'll soon know about it. Good Luck!!! (I'm sure you'll be great)

Vice President - Erica Chisholm

Erica Chrisholm

Email her: vice-president@bristol-leroc.org.uk

There is no doubt that Erica is set to rebrand the VP position and incorporate a new responsibility - being our in-house photographer. I expect the LeRoc website to be updated constantly with LeRoc photos every week. She'll make an excellent VP! Very sad to be giving up this role.

Treasurer- Tom Sammut

Tom SammutEmail him: treasurer@bristol-leroc.org.uk

Tom is an awesome dancer; in all honesty, from the first week, there were bets on Tom being on the Committee in 2011/12. Guys, if you want to learn how to dance, Tom has set a great example through sheer commitment. And look how fun it is (just don't look at anyone around you laughing...)

To be honest, she's probably laughing at Alex as he flirts outrageously!

Secretary - Eddie Lucas

Eddie Lucas

Email him: secretary@bristol-leroc.org.uk

Eddie is a complete joker but also a great lead. Following this picture being taken, rumours have started as to what is under Eddie's top. Hmm...on a Jive note, he luckily got to lead Rose and Lydia in the 2011 Dance Show...very jealous.

Social Secretary - Rose Murray

 Email her: social@bristol-leroc.org.uk

Rose is our fun loving social sec and the one to watch out for as she heads to the pub!! Chat to her for info on what socials are happening this year, or for that matter - just for a good old gossip!

She has been dancing for a few years and loves to be asked to dance - so don't be scared to ask, she probably won't bite...

Music Coordinator - Jonny Furze

Jonny

Email him: music@bristol-leroc.org.uk

Jonny is awesome and this year, he's got some big shoes to fill as he's the LeRoc music coordinator. Obviously the man for the job given his fashion. "Make Music Not....{fill in the gap...prize for the best answer}" I hope he manages to do the impossible and please the crowds. I'm curious as to what new songs/styles of music Jonny is bound to bring to the LeRoc scene.

Also, women swoon...why wouldn't they? (Picture not represntative of a typical woman's response around Jonny. )

Room Booking Officer- Martin Bendle

Email him: rooms@bristol-leroc.org.uk

Martin is a dancer. I tried to count once how many different types of dancing he had tried and I lost count when I got to 10 (because I ran out of fingers...). I think it is therefore a testimony to the LeRoc Society that he has honoured us with his skill, commitment and effort by choosing to be on the LeRoc Committee this year. He is tremendously talented and is currently Intermediate LeRoc Champion from the South West Championships, Intermediate BritRock Champion and has probably won further competitions that I've forgotten. He is currently touring the country competing and is proof that if you want to excel at dancing, you can do at the Bristol University LeRoc Society.

Finally, I should probably give Martin some stick. So...this year, Martin will be living his dream and continue his "relationship" with Margaret. We won't judge you Martin. Many a dancer would have done the same thing. For those of you not involved in Union Politics...think what you will of that...you're probably right.

Non-Portfolio Officer - Kate Rogerson

Kate

Email her: info@bristol-leroc.org.uk

Kate was an awesome dancer within a few weeks of starting. Unfortunately, she has decided to burn down trees, bushes and plants and so LeRoc will have to sadly settle with her being a Non-Portfolio Officer this year. As punishment, feel free to purposefully thrust your hand in her face.

 Sorry Kate!

Non-Portfolio Officer - Emma Ings

Emma

Email her:  info@bristol-leroc.org.uk

I don't have a LeRoc-based picture of Emma - so I had to steal this off of Facebook. But whilst on ye olde Facebook, I see that Emma considers dancing to be a "sport". It's not a sport even though it can be exerting. Also, I almost paniced when I saw she was from Newport....and then my fears dissipated whe I saw it was Newport, Isle of Wight. Why would the Isle of Wight  associate itself with Wales (sorry Bryony!).

Non-Portfolio Officer - Bryony Turtle

Email her: info@bristol-leroc.org.uk

As outgoing President, Bryony has bravely decided to see out the final year of her degree as an NPO.

The added benefit of this is that Bryony will now beable to attend Wine Society events and satisfy her need for fine wine. I may have to make some guest appearences back in Bristol so I can go with you.

She also goes the extra mile when dressing up, as shown in her picture here where she is embracing the Halloween spirit with her...naughty and nice (?) outfit...to fit her personality...? Or did I just not understand her outfit?

Non-Portfolio Officer - Alexander MacGregor

Alex

Email him: info@bristol-leroc.org.uk

"There's just something about Alex MacGregor". No one quite knows what it is but he is arguably the most loveable and popular guy in LeRoc. One might be bold enough to extend that to Bristol University. Evidence: I was sitting through the Clifton Christ Church Annual Student Carol Service and the church decided to photograph lots of students holding a card with "What Christmas means to them" written on it. Alex's picture comes on screen, and there are gasps, screams and yelps of "It's Alex!" from several sections of the church. Alex had no comment to make which begs the question as to whether he strategically planted his friends around the church to make himself look cool...

Non-Portfolio Officer - Emily Papaspyru

Emily

Email her:  info@bristol-leroc.org.uk

What can I say about Emily? Well...Emily has been dancing as long as I have. Sadly, where I have to leave, Emily's still living the dream and gets to stay. If only all could be so lucky to be in their fifth year of their LeRoc Society life.

Past Committee Member - Andy Bell

Email him: info@bristol-leroc.org.uk

Andy is a loveable moderate socialist from Oxford who claims to be related to Alice Nutter, one of the Pendle Witches burned at the stake in the 17th Century. So dont mess? Bell? Nutter? I'm not seeing the link. If his surname was Nutter, that would deserve some serious respect.

Quite scarily, one of his favourite quotes is:

"Oh, Tim,' murmured George, half waking up as she felt him against her. 'Oh, Tim, you mustn't - but you do feel so nice."

Apparently it's from the Famous Five...I'll leave you to judge him.
