Getting Involved

If you're keen to get involved in the running of the society, why not stand for a committee position at the next AGM? On this page we've put together some frequently asked questions about joining the Leroc committee.

So what do committee members do exactly?

President: Chairing meetings, organising the fresh stand, arranging additional workshops and performances, making announcements in lessons and via email, booking teachers and rooms.   Should delegate to other committee members and take overall charge of society.

Vice President:  Doing tasks delegated by president, helping overall running of society including setting up room for lessons, arranging printing of flyers for fresh stall and other events, maintaining website.

Secretary: Registering people at lessons, maintaining the membership list, checking the society pigeon hole for post, maintaining the mailing lists, writing and circulating minutes from meetings.  Should be at Union 20 minutes before lesson to register and welcome new and existing members.

Treasurer: Registering people at lessons, keeping accounts, paying money into the bank, arranging annual account audit, liasing with president of payment of teachers.  Should be at Union 20 minutes before lesson to register and welcome new and existing members.

Social secretary/publicity: Promoting social events to the members, taking names of those interested, Booking restaurants/venues/tickets, collecting any advance payment (eg for tickets, deposits etc), liasing with other committees/halls/bars about social events and demos.

Music Coordinator: Setting up and taking down PA equipment at lessons (with the aid of other committee members), ensuring equipment is working and up to date, maintaining a collection of suitable dancing music and taking music requests from members.

Anything else I should know?

President and Treasurer must be members of the Union and must not be in their final year for any part of their term in office.

Committee members may be asked to take on duties other than stated above.  In particular, all committee members should help on the Fresh stall at some point.

And what do I get in return?

As well as getting to shape the way your society runs, you are entitled to FREE LESSONS at the Union on Thursdays and also at the Folk House on Mondays.

I'm interested, what do I do next?

The committee changes over at the AGM, which takes place at the end of the Spring Term.  If you're interested in one of the postions, you may want to email the relevant committee member for more information about what the job involves.  You should also drop the president a line to express your interest in the position and include a couple of paragraphs explaining why you'd like the position and why you'd be good at it.

If more than one candidate is after the same position, you may have to give a very brief and informal speech at the AGM indicating why you'd be good at the job, and the decision will then go to a vote.

Good luck!
