A mixture of modern jive, rock'n'roll and dirty dancing, Le Roc is a fast, fun and sexy dance with easy to learn moves. Le Roc can be danced anywhere: in clubs, at balls, or at the regular dance venues in Bristol, to most kinds of upbeat music, be it 60s Swing, 70s disco, or current chart music.
The style of dance began around the time of the Second World War, when American GIs decided to dance, in order to pass the time, while they were stationed in Paris. At the time, the dance was probably more reminiscent to other, more well-known forms, such as the Jitterbug and Lindyhop and only consisted of a limited number of moves. The French clearly liked the dance and continued to practise it after the end of the war. As time passed, the dance matured with age and, as such, the number of available moves increased.
Today, the dance is practised widely in this country and consists of over 200 moves. Many of these are easy to learn and, within 5 or 6 weeks, you will find yourself impressing your friends and yourself. You will also find that it is very much an arm-lead dance, not concentrating on footwork to the same degree as in Ballroom Dancing or Salsa.
No previous knowledge or experience of dancing is required. The lessons get increasingly complex through the year, so the earlier you start coming, the easier you will find it. There is no need to come with a partner; we match you up with whoever is there. For more information on joining, see our membership page.
